Museums in Amsterdam

For a small city, Amsterdam has a lot of museums. At last count we had over 50 and more open all the time, a recent one is The Museum of Bags and Pursesand are among one of the main tourist attractions besides sex and drugs, of course.

Some are world famous likeThe Rijksmuseumand TheVan Gogh Museumwhich house some of the greatest paintings by the Dutch masters.

There seems to be a museum for nearly everything in Amsterdam. Besides the Dutch masters, you’ll find museums dedicated to horror, torture, sex, erotica, modern art photography as well as thewell know Heineken

Some of lesser know like theStedelijk Museumand the very impressiveNEMOthe technology museum which is housed in a purpose-built building resembling a sinking ship.

The Maritime shipping Museum is close by and worth a look as outside they have docked a replica of a Dutch trading ship.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum is world famous for itscollection of Dutch masterpieces as well as it’s early religious works and is also Netherlands largest museum. The buildings itself is a masterpiece and has recently reopened after years of renovations.

House Boat Museum

This is an actual houseboat which people live on but during the summer months, it’s open to the public so if you ever wondered what it is like to live on the waters of Amsterdam this is your chance. Located at Prinsengracht 296.

Van Gogh Museum

Well worth a visit to see this collection of paintings and sketches showing Van Gogh at various stages of his life along with many letters written mostly to his brother Theo. Also selected works by friends from this incredible collection. Located at Paulus Potterstraat 7.

Rembrandthuis-Rembrandt’s HouseMuseum

The house where Rembrandt lived from 1639 until 1659 is some house and now the home of a large collection of his etchings and the very house where most of them were created. It’s also is home to a large collection of paintings (Not his) of people who inspired him, like Pieter Lastman among others. Located at Jodenbreestraat 4 (Just up from Nieuwmarkt)

Sex Museum

Another must visit when in Amsterdam:. Fairly crap to put it bluntly but you have to see it anyway. The Venus Temple houses an extensive collection of erotic paintings, pictures, objects and recordings from different ages and cultures from all over the world. Coming attraction is The “Oscar Wilde Room” in the Sex Museum Amsterdam. What will the future bring?., come and see.Located at Damrak 18

Erotic Museum

Located right in the heart of the red-light district, this museum reflects the history of the area. Five floors full of real erotic rubbish. Still worth a look especially on rainy days. Located at OZ. Achterburgwal 54

Torture Museum

Another place to visit on a rainy day is the Torture Museum. On display are some of the most horrid inventions to extract confessions from poor unfortunates. Complete with straps, spikes, weights, blades and more, these machines are sure to make anyone talk, whether it be the truth or not is any ones guess. Worth a visit if you have nothing else to do.
